The number of marriages celebrated in France in 2008 fell by 3% over one year: 265,400 marriages in 2008.
Duration of marriages
Tough, to stay married for more than 14 years in France. Here are the refined figures for 2006:
- 5 years: 18%
- 5 years to 9 years: 27%
- 10 to 14 years: 19.5%
- 15 to 19 years: 14%

The myth of the marriage of love takes a hard hit, but this does not mean that we should give up the idea of getting married! The record of marriage longevity in France is 80 years old.
Age at which we get married
Today, the French are getting married later and later, on average four years later than in 1990: 31 years for men, 29 years for women.
The cost of a wedding
In terms of wedding, fees increase with the number of guests, it's well known. In 2008, the average cost of a wedding was € 11,800.
The top two expense items for a wedding are catering and honeymoon.
A budget that may seem important but is in fact rather modest compared to our European neighbors: 25,000 to 30,000 euros on average.
The average budget per guest is 80 euros.
The divorce
We get married later and later, but we divorce earlier and earlier.
In 1990, after 10 years of marriage, 14% of couples had divorced. A rapidly increasing figure: in 2008, after 3 years of marriage, 33% of couples were (already) divorced.
Rise of the PACS
100,000 Civil Solidarity Pacts were signed in 2007, and the number of PACS concluded is increasing rapidly. A real success.
While waiting for more precise statistics, between 2008 and 2009 the number of dissolved PACS rose to 6% on average.
